It's brave of you to share your story and I'm sorry to hear you went through such a tough time. The irony of religion is that is does not cater for the deeply spiritual person. If you are seeking a more connecting and profound understanding of the universe I don't think it can be found in the rulebooks of religion and yet every religion will have elements of it. I think this broader understanding is what the Tao offers

I grew up in a Pentecostal church, Methodist, and then Southern Baptist. I know very well the judgment and self-righteous criticism you speak of.
It has been a hard road for many of us.
