Time Up! Or Is It?
It happens to all of us. One day we are kids and 13,000 days later we are 40-year-old, middle aged, adults. All it takes is 280 million blinks of an eye.
Growing up, I heard adults tell me that life goes by “fast,” and I thought one day it would be true. That somehow, I would look back and not believe how quickly life happened. But I’m 40 now and I don’t feel that way at all! I know exactly how I got here, and I know this is what I chose.
The Montage Life
My favorite montage in any film is the training montage from Rocky IV. Man vs. nature, good vs. evil, America vs. USSR! Everything about this time lapsed training video is absolutely fantastic and I’ll add it below.
I feel like this is how people live their lives. Jumping from place to place. Being so carefree and careless that they wake up and not remember how they grew a beard or ended up in Russia training for a boxing match. Ok, maybe not that one, but how about waking up with multiple children and a dead-end job?
Being open to whatever comes next isn’t the same as living your life with no plan.
Do I wish I could give it up and go live in the woods alone? Yes, as long as I can bring Wi-Fi, water, and electricity. Do I wish that I could live my life without thinking about what I need to do tomorrow? Yes, but I also have three children who have homework. There are also bills to pay and chores to do. Sometimes I wonder what people are doing for tens of thousands of days and then wonder why their lives didn’t turn out the way they wanted. Your life isn’t a montage. It’s a book.
You live life one chapter, one page, and one sentence at a time, not in a musical montage.
14,600 Days
Be mindful of your actions and your emotions. From the day you’re born to the day you turn 40, there are 14,600 days. That’s not a small number by any measure. If you expect to live until 80, that’s 29,200 days.
Each day is important and valuable. You have nearly 30,000 opportunities to try again. If you burnt your toast this morning, make toast tomorrow and take it out faster. If you messed up at work today, write down what you did incorrectly and read it tonight. Don’t assume you’ll remember weeks from now when it happens again. Make a point to study your own life. Evaluate and analyze your past so that your future can be enjoyable and relaxing.

If you’re struggling today, and you think there isn’t enough time, then remember 14,600. It’s a lot of days. We aren’t guaranteed another sunrise tomorrow, but I bet you receive at least one more. So, take some time to sit quietly tonight, write down your thoughts, hopes, and dreams. And when you’re ready…
