It’s Not a Fluke

Publication Growth
When do you consider an event part of a pattern? How many repetitions do you need? Is it three or four? Five for sure, right? Well, how about 10? That’s how many days in a row Flipboard has rocked the viewership of my Medium publication, The Taoist Online.
In the charts above, notice the pump on April 1st. It may not appear like much compared to what came later, but it was a 100% increase from just four days before. We continued rapidly increasing for six days and suddenly began a swift decline.
Watching the trends, I figured the honeymoon was over and we would return to our previously normal rate of 200 views per day. That was until yesterday when star writers Andrew Pretzel and Simon Kupfer released two viral articles on the same day. The new spike shattered previous records increasing our views by nearly 3000% from their previous all-time just 12 days ago.
Looking at our average unique visitors per day (which is delayed 24–48 hours) we can see TTOs average has jumped to 678 (the green line) for the last 30 days.
TTO now has a larger unique daily visitor rate that Medium publications that are many times our size in Medium subscribers. As of this writing TTO has 95 followers on Medium and only two of our 14 writers have 1,000+ followers.
Conclusion
If you want the world to know what you’re doing, and if you truly want to help people through your writing, you need to go where the people are.
Someone might need to hear your stories and struggles. If you don’t try, they will never receive the help they need. No, you won’t get paid by Medium for external views, but it’s not always about the money! Sometimes, it’s about doing the right thing for the people who need your help.
So, get out there!
